Although I must point out that my house is super insulated with foam and is an energy star house so it is tight. I see the most savings in the summer. This information is based upon my own now five year system. I won't kid you that the upfront cost is huge. There are state rebates too. I think what you say about the cost and ROI is a bit misleading. Yes, it's good for the environment, but we wouldn't live long enough to make back what we spent. Unless a person has a bottomless wallet, these choices are not so simple. I look forward to the day when prices on green remodeling become competitive. I did too and find it to be amazing. I built a new house four years ago with alot of green materials and geo was top on my list. I expect a five to seven year payback on the geo.
